Mayor Ezzy Ashcraft stated that she would like an update on the concerns related to catalytic converter theft cages; requested clarification about the use of Truleo. The Police Chief stated staff has started an educational campaign about catalytic converter thefts; the campaign focuses on things that can minimize thefts; part of the education includes devices that can prevent theft, such as cages. Mayor Ezzy Ashcraft inquired whether staff is seeing the same high level of catalytic converter thefts in Alameda. The Police Chief responded catalytic converter theft is not just in Alameda; the trend is National; catalytic converter theft is up 800% across the country. The Police Captain stated the thefts are still a concern; staff is working collaboratively with other agencies; there has been significant progress with other agencies in dismantling criminal rings; information sharing has been robust and has provided many leads to help solve cases; headway is being made.
